How old is Mt. Alvernia? The current building was constructed in 1950 as a seminary for Franciscan seminarians. The buidling's use changed to a retreat center in 1967. Other buildings once stood on the property, including the former Clyde mansion.
Is Mt. Alvernia a parish? Mt. Alvernia is a Roman Catholic Retreat House and is a ministry of the Franciscan Friars. Although the Franciscan Friars welcome you to Mass here at "the Mount," it is not a parish. You are invited on behalf of the Friars Minor who reside at this community. The chapel does not enjoy parochial rights. This means that baptisms, weddings, and funeral (other than the friars themselves) are not permitted. The faithful who attend Mass here continue to have a responsibility to support their home parish both financially and by their active participation.
